Associate Director of Social Ministries

The Diocese of San Jose is seeking a full-time Associate Director of Social Ministries. The Associate Director of Social Ministries will serve as a resource to the Bishop on prolife matters and will coordinate all prolife activities including Respect Life Month. The office of Social Ministries supports a consistent ethic of life which includes all life from conception to natural death. The qualified candidate will assist the Director of Social Ministries in fulfilling the mission of the office to educate the people of the Diocese of San Jose on the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and its application to contemporary local, national, and international issues, to advocate for public policy which affirms human life and dignity and reflects a consistent life ethic, and to develop a constituency on social concerns. Social Ministries seeks to accomplish its mission through its various projects and programs in support of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan in which living out Catholic Social Teaching is one of the three critical issues. The position requires an ability to effectively communicate values of Catholic social teaching in a wide variety of settings and in a multicultural environment.

Qualifications

The candidate must be a practicing Catholic, active member of a Catholic faith community and in good standing. The candidate must have knowledge of Catholic social teaching and be able to articulate it clearly. An understanding and appreciation for church structures and ecclesiology is necessary. Additional qualifications include a graduate degree in theology, pastoral ministry or a related field, at least five years of proven administrative experience, excellent organizational skills, the ability to multi-task and work on a broad spectrum of social issues, as well as effective verbal and written communication skills. The ability to prioritize and flexibility to work in a dynamic environment is necessary. Spanish is not required, but is a plus. The ideal candidate should possess experience using innovative media technology to promote and market the Social Ministries' programs. The position will require some evening and weekend work.

Grassroots Advocacy Specialist, CRS US Operations

Department/Location: Advocacy/Baltimore

Background:

CRS is committed to advocating for policies and practices that can help improve the lives of the people the agency serves overseas. The agency recognizes that advancing CRS policy positions in the U.S. foreign policymaking arena can only be successful by implementing a comprehensive strategy that coordinates policy development, legislative advocacy, grassroots and grasstops education and engagement, and media and communications outreach.

Primary Function:

In support of CRS' grassroots and grasstops advocacy strategy, the Grassroots Advocacy Specialist is responsible for contributing to and implementing grassroots advocacy activities to advance CRS' policy priorities. As a key member of the Advocacy Department staff, the Grassroots Advocacy Specialist is responsible for identifying, coordinating, and employing multiple channels to communicate the work of the CRS Advocacy Department to internal and external stakeholders and audiences that will increase knowledge, awareness, and advocacy in support of CRS' public policy positions. The Grassroots Advocacy Specialist contributes to the CRS Advocacy Department's grassroots and grasstops advocacy strategy and serves as the primary liaison on advocacy issues for the CRS regional offices. The Grassroots Advocacy Specialist develops tools, materials, and resources for outreach efforts to grassroots and grasstops advocates. S/he is responsible for monitoring and evaluating the growth and activity of our grassroots and grasstops constituency network; identifying and documenting best practices for grassroots and grasstops advocacy efforts and activities; and providing regular reports to internal stakeholders. The Grassroots Advocacy Specialist also provides day-to-day support to the Deputy Director and Senior Director as needed.

Specific Job Responsibilities:


1. External Communications

1. Manages the development and production of webcasts and other events on agency policy and advocacy priorities in consultation with key internal stakeholders and external partners. Responsibilities include topic and presenter selection, invitation creation and dissemination, logistics, presentation development, evaluation and feedback.

2. Identifies, implements, and markets innovative technologies such as webcasting and other communications techniques to engage grassroots and grasstops leaders on CRS policy and advocacy priorities.

3. Writes, disseminates, and promotes newsletters and other regular advocacy updates for grassroots/grasstops constituents as needed including drafting content and guiding it through the approval process.

4.Produces and advertises regular blog posts relating to CRS' policy and advocacy priorities and grassroots/grasstops engagement that include video footage, photos and other interactive materials.

5.Creates, disseminates, and promotes action alerts on advocacy priorities for web, social media, mobile, and other available communications channels.

6.Represents CRS and the Advocacy Department at external meetings, conferences, workshops, and other events.


2. Internal Communications

1. Maintains regular communications with the CRS Washington, DC and CRS regional offices to collect and disseminate updates on CRS advocacy and policy priorities and grassroots and grasstops engagement strategies.

2. Manages the development, production, and promotion of regular internal briefings and other events to inform and engage internal audiences of the Advocacy Department's work, including topic and presenter selection, invitation creation, dissemination, and promotion, logistics, presentation development, evaluation and feedback.

3. Organizes regular internal conference calls and other communication mechanisms to ensure members of the Advocacy Team (HQ, DC and regional staff) are working in coordination to pursue CRS' advocacy agenda.

4. Maintains and promotes the use of the Advocacy SharePoint site to ensure timely sharing of information, background documents, and upcoming events.

5.Represents the Advocacy Department at internal meetings and events and ensures appropriate follow up.


3. Coordination with CRS Regional Offices

1. Serves as primary headquarters liaison to the CRS regional offices regarding advocacy issues to ensure ongoing communication, information, and coordination of grassroots/grasstops advocacy efforts in support of CRS' policy and advocacy priorities.

2.Provides the CRS regional offices with timely information, instructions, and resources to successfully carry out grassroots/grasstops advocacy in targeted congressional districts and states.

3.Identifies, documents, and promotes best practices for grassroots and grasstops outreach activities including district visits, grasstops mobilization, use of technology and materials development.

4.Coordinates and promotes grassroots capacity-building trainings for legislative advocacy and district lobby visits in collaboration with other CRS departments.

5.Develops and executes strategic plans for growing and increasing the actions of CRS' grassroots advocacy membership and strengthen its advocacy and outreach capacity.


4. Monitoring and Evaluation

1. Compiles and analyzes regular reports on grassroots advocacy membership and activity to measure success, identify best practices, and inform grassroots advocacy strategy.

2. Initiates regular reviews of advocacy materials and engagement channels, including webcasts, action alerts, newsletters, blog posts and others; measures their effectiveness to engage grassroots in CRS' policy and advocacy efforts; and implements innovations and changes as necessary.

External: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and national Catholic organizations, other non-profit and faith-based organizations.

Qualifications:

1. Minimum Bachelor's degree in political science, international relations, communications or related field. Master's preferred.

2. Three years experience in grassroots advocacy, policy campaign, or related government relations, public affairs, marketing or communications position.

3. Strong knowledge of desktop and web-based software programs, including MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, SharePoint, Convio eCRM and Common Ground, and Mobile Commons.

4. Proven track record creating content for and working with various online/social media communication tools such as blogs, podcasts, Twitter, Flickr, Wikis, Facebook, YouTube, and others.

5. Basic knowledge of HTML.

6. Knowledge of federal-level public policy development and government essential.

7. Strong knowledge of grassroots initiatives, public policy campaigns. Understanding of humanitarian relief and development sector preferred.

8. Proven record in project management.
